I have the nikon 3100 with the kit lens. What's the next step lens?

The nikon is my first dslr camera. I have the kit lens but I want an extra lens that i can take creative pictures with. What's the next best lens that is fairly reasonable? I heard the 35mm f1.i8 is good but i seem them from 169 to 400?

Hopefully all your photographic attempts will be creative. Could you be more specific, please.

If you are into shooting landscapes, the AF-S 10-24 mm is the next lens
If you are a sports and action photographer, the AF-S 55-300 would be best
If you want to shoot portraits, the AF-S 50 mm f/1.4 is the choice for you.

You're a young girl and you want "creative pictures"… Yep, the 35mm f1.8 AF-S sounds like a plan. Alternatively wait a week or three for the 50mm f1.8 af-s to come out.
