I'm having problems with my Nikon N50 35mm SLR camera?

I was trying to work on a project or Photography class. I had loaded the camera and that was fine. But when i looked through the viewfinder it was black. All i could see was the light meter in the bottom of the screen. Then when i pushed the shutter button the digital screen read error. Please help!

Added (1). I have already took the lens off and re mounted it a few times. And there's no lens cap on the camera.

Sounds like the lens was not mounted properly. I assume you did remove the lens cap?
