How to quote a price for family portraits?
i'm thinking of becoming a family portrait photographer.i'm a fairly good photographer and used to only do photos for family and friends. I have a new customer and was not sure what to charge.i'm shooting with a nikon D 90 and have lots of Accessories, i have also taken a few classes with the pros. And i have a good idea of what i'm doing, Like i said i'm just starting out professionally so i need any advice i can get, if you have any posing ideas i could use help with those too

There are two phases to this

First you charge for the shooting session. This fee pays for the overhead, the cost of running your business.

Second you charge for each print or print package you sell.

This second fee is what pays for everything else. Food, clothing, housing costs, savings, car payment, insurance and all of that.

Here is how you figure out what the cost of doing business is.

What you actually charge will have to do with what other photographers charge for the same services you plan to offer

A good starting point may be $200 for the shooting session which includes maybe one 8x10, two 5x7 and four 4x6 inch prints. All other prints are billed separately. Many photographers make a CD that holds low resolution prints like 600x400 @ 72 PPI with a watermark in the middle of them. They order prints from that CD

You can also try seeing what other professionals in your area charge, and price accordingly (you won't be able to charge as much as them if you are not as good as them)
