How to get a micro SD card out of a SD card?

My brother and I just got a Gopro Hero 3. We really like it but three stores that we looked at were sold out of the micro SD cards that you need to use the Gopro.
My dad has a really nice Nikon camera and he has a 16gb SD card. My brother's friend said that you can just take apart the SD card and you can use it as a micro SD card.
Is this true? And if so, how do you take out the micro SD card?
