High end compact digital camera or a MILC / EVIL?

My compact digital camera needs an update (currently the brilliant Panasonic Lumix TZ-4).

I'm a casual photographer, so do not want to upgrade as far as a DSLR.

However there are these new types inbetween compacts and DSLR, called MILC (mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras), that have caught my eye… PARTICULARLY THE NIKON 1 J1!

However, are these much better than say a high end compact digital camera?

Personally just bought the Sony HX9V, it is top of the line, pocketable point and shoot. $300 and the size leaves me more inclined to have it with me @ all times. 16x optic zoom and amazing stability. I took a picture of my car from the top of the space needle (no tripod) and clarity was good enough to read license plates when zoomed in, 30 degree angle approx 1/8 mile range. Definitely not a "pro" cam, but takes exceptional shots. Have printed some 8x10 and clarity was immaculate.

I'm not sure about it but I guess they have bigger sensors than PNS and bridges. Yes, if you want something more without going dSLR then this is where you should be - the hybrids.

It depend on your budget and mood, Nikon V1 and J1 are better option as MILC / EVIL
You can also buy Canon G1 X it comes with better and bigger sensor than current Micro Four third and Nikon 1 series.

The Nikon J1 is a EVIL camera. And for the same price you can get the D3100. The J1 has no viewfinder, nor a hot shoe for a flash.
