Good camera to start with?

I'm currently using a canon powershot S3 IS and it's nice but I have to share it with my mother. While she doesn't use it as much as I do it'd be nice to have my own camera. I've got a fair amount of experience with this camera so I think I might able to handle something more advanced. Any suggestions under $700, preferably either canon or nikon?

Your reason for purchasing your own camera is valid. But what makes you think that you need a DSLR. Or rather an interchangeable lens camera? Do you plan on making 11x14 and 16x20 prints?
Your $700.00 is just the beginning. Have you visited the web sites of Canon or Nikon? And then priced lenses at say B&H Photo?
If you come the conclusion your decision is valid-fine! But otherwise you might consider a non interchangeable camera with a long lens, like the Canon SX40 IS.
Good Luck!

I would get a nikon. Nikons will never let you down and have you seen the zoom? LOVE IT!
i use a nikon to take pics.of animals. A nikon will NOT let you down!

Zoom depends on the lens, not the camera unless you are using a point and shoot…
nikon D5100, and it comes with a 18-55mm(3x), and go buy a telescope(long zoom) lens… (80-200mm)
