Why won't D90 read on my computer?

I used to have a Nikon D40, and now a D300… They both read when plugged in with the USB wire. But when I try plugging my boyfriend's camera (D90) into my computer it won't read. Why is this? Does something need to be updated?

Maybe you need software from the Nikon web site. If the camera uses SD cards, you can take the card out of the camera and put it in a reader.
