Why are full frame fashion photographers mocking me for using a Nikon D300s?
I was at a Fashion workshop today and everyone was boasting about how they have full frame bodies and everything. I love my D300s and I'm happy with it. It doesn't make me unprofessional to use a D300s. Yes, I could if I wanted buy a D3s but why? It's heavy, so heavy, expensive to replace and it doesn't take SDHC. The D300s is a dream for me as it takes two storage formats and therefore maximises compatibility IMO. It's a very good camera. What's this whole "My sensor is better than yours" deal? The eye is the best sensor that exists yet it is smaller than full frame…
It all depends on who was in the workshop with you. Personally, I say that anyone who is still an equipment snob is inadequate in other areas. It's true that you can make larger, cleaner prints with a full format camera, but the people who were talking trash to you are the same ones who would be defending their inadequate sensors if they has to stand next to a room full of people using the Leaf back on a Hasselblad.
I have a D300 and for ME, it is a wonderful camera. I'm not shooting fashion, but when I'm elbow-to-elbow with other photogs at the race track, the ones that KNOW say that they wish they had a cropped sensor instead of their full frames. Capture speed and "crop factor" are all an advantage in this situation. I've made 24x36 prints from the D300, too, and I defy anyone to criticize the image quality. No problem. And yet, on a different day with a different subject, I admit to a bit of FX envy…
