I'm looking to upgrade my current DSLR?

I currently have a Nikon D70 6.2 mp, and want to upgrade. I wish to stay in the Nikon family, and have been leaning towards a d700. I'm not sure my skill level requires that much camera, but it's on my wish list. Any advice for an upgrade. I'm a hobby photographer that would eventually like to take it to the next level.

You offer limited information: you have to evaluate your existing kit of lenses and filters and other equipment you might need for the photography you actually do, versus a significant investment in a camera body. The D70 is an older model, and of course the newer Nikons offer much more than just more megapixels, but first things first.

You have some experience and a decent DSLR: what is it you are doing right now that you want to do better, and what do you need for it? Is it the camera body or something other? Obviously, anybody can cut and paste specs from newer Nikon models, but does that answer your question?

Try moving up to the D7000 or D300s. It is the next level from the D70 and still use your old DX lenses.

The D700 is a full frame dSLR so you will need to eventually make sure that your lenses are a able to cover 35 mm and full frame sensors like the D700 or D3 series cameras.

Whatever skills you have now, are totally transferable to your new Nikon

Look at the D90, D300s or D7000. The D7000 is the newest, so the others will probably drop in price some, especially the D90.

The D90 and D300s have the same sensor, the D7000 sensor has more MP.

The D700 is nice, but by the time you outfit it completely, (grip, D3 battery, battery holder, charger, you can go cheap with 8 AA, but the EN-EL4a is a good battery) then it's about the same price as a factory refurbished D3. The D3 has a lot more computing horsepower, and is a far better camera.

D700… I'm going to pull up a chair and watch that confrontation. Most people think they need full frame and think they are good enough aren't.

Most logical succesor for you would be a D90 or D7000 but it depends what you shoot and why you want to upgrade.
