I'm think about purchasing a Nikon D300S. Is it any good?
Also, is there another camera in this class and around the same price that may be better.
No… No I wouldn't call it good. Superb and phenomenal are words that come to mind. Only thing that comes close in capabilities in that price range is canon's 7d.
Now, to make that camera really perform you need to know what you are doing, this is NOT a beginner's camera, it even lacks scene modes.
An another alternative which is not yet available in the shops until end of october is Nikon's new D7000.
It is the latest incarnation of the Nikon D300 used by professionals who need an APS-C sensored camera to supplement their full frame D3 series cameras
It is a fine camera.
Here is a sample shot with the older D300 for your examination. Of course the image has been reduced to 600x400 pixels at 72 DPI for posting on the internet. This shot was at 3200 ISO.
D300s is an amazing camera, it's a very solid and powerful camera if you know how to get the most of it. In it's class the 7D comes quite close to matching it's performance.
However if you want something full frame, you may consider a Canon 5D (mkI). And if you need to take a camera to some harsher conditions you may want to consider the Canon 1DmkII. These two are used options for specific purposes. The all rounder is the D300 or the 7D.
That's a great camera!
The other camera in it's class would be the EOS 7D. It is the camera of choice and desire for many a professionals and enthusiasts as on today.
If you have a Nikon D40-D80 range camera esp. With multiple Nikon optics you wish to keep and use, a D300s makes good sense as an upgrade.
However, if you are making a first time investment and ready to spend big on a pro-featured camera, the best one to date price-performance and features wise is the EOS 7D esp. With a 28-135mm kit lens.
Both the cameras are equal fun with the levels of control and speed with the Canon having an slight edge over the Nikon D300s in fps. However, the EOS 7D with Dual Digic 4 and newer faster Autofocus system, Full HD and 18 megapixels make it a better candidate today.
Nikon D300S Digital SLR Camera is one of the best camera. Unless you can afford full frame this is the camera to buy.
