How to get the photos off my D700?

I struck lucky this christmas! I received a brand new Nikon D700 under the tree, and all during today (25th) i was snapping away. Now it has come to the end of the day i want to pick out the best photos and edit them in photoshop on my computer. So i went to the d700 box and got out the provided USB cable, plugged it in, and opened Adobe Bridge on my computer. I went to my computer and clicked on d700, and there was no files! I tried to use windows explorer and tried using the "importing photos" windows wizard, but all failed. I haven't got a CF card reader and i want to go out and take photos of the family tomorrow, but i have almost filled up the memory card.

See page 238-241 in your manual.
Install Nikon Transfer and ViewNX from the CD that came with your camera first.
Connect USB cable to camera and computer.
Turn your camera on.
Transfer should start automatically.
See "Nikon Transfer Help" if it doesn't work.
Yes, but a card reader!
YES, you are lucky!

You are too lucky. Hopefully you'll make real use out of your DSLR, or else plenty of other aspiring photographers will be more than happy to have your camera for free.

*hits head on desk*

You take a big rock and you crack that baby open*. That's how you get at those photos inside.
*disclaimer-i can't be held responsible if you have no sense of humor, or no brains, and you try this and screw up your new toy.

OH dear.
I suppose give it a day or so and we're going to be inundated with these types of questions.
