First DSLR Camera? Sony, Nikon, and Canon?

Okay so I'm 13, a girl, and I really love photography. I was supposed to get my first DSLR camera for Christmas but I don't know what kind to get.
My friend got a Sony a580 or something like that and the pictures are awesome. Except then I heard that Sony isn't as food as Canon and Nikon, since it's new. I was going to get the same camera as my friend because I'm not sure if I need like a bajillion different lenses that Canon and Nikon have.
I was going to get the Samsung ST550, a digital camera that was dual screen, because I heard it has a great "beauty" feature. And I wish that they made a DSLR that also had a beauty feature, because I'm not getting the Samsung. And it's not like I can just bring a DSLR camera to school and take pictures with my friends, so I'm using my iPhone 4 as my "digital" camera. Or like a camera I can take anywhere. I like to take pictures of random things, ahahaha. Self portraits for Facebook profile pictures, my dog, babies and toddlers from church, nature, and flowers, and jumping/moving pictures. And over Spring Break, our whole entire extended family is going to Hawaii and I want to take pictures, and I don't think my phone will cut it.
So what DSLR camera should I get? And I probably won't get a lot of lenses.

I want the Sony a580.

Well.you're proving my point. Sony is very good at marketing cameras with just the right feature set to appeal to the uninformed bebinner.

It all depends. If you want to get serious about photography then look at a nikon d3100 with an 18-105 lens. If you want to stay in the "let\s keep it on full auto and pump out a steady stream of shots typical for my age" then any DSLR will do and sony will add the bonus of perhaps the best liveview system

Canon has the best sensor but Sony can save you money on the lenses because its auto focus feature is already in the body of the camera whereas Canon you will have to pay extra each time you buy a lens. Stay away from Samsung! They have cool features but their quality sucks.

If you buy Sony you'll have a little more difficulty in sourcing lenses, a little not a great deal. Contrary to what another user here posted Sony's A580 knocks the spots of the Nikon D3100, it's more equivalent to the D5100 (which happens to use a Sony sensor).

Personally I'd steer clear of the A33/35 or A55 due simply to the electronic view finder being too low a resolution (you can see the pixels), but if you can stretch a little further the A65 is a superb alternative.

Whatever you do, never base your camera purchase decision on megapixels. More MP means less image quality sense you are trying to cram more onto the same sensor.

If you want a basic camera to take basic photos then some of those sony cameras just look awesome. I would never suggest them though. Sony DSLR's are more like the rich person's Point and shoot.

Go with Canon or Nikon. I'm a Canon user and my Brother is a Nikon User. For this, I have access to both. It's all about the lenses. It's also opinion based. From my opinion, Nikon has better quality lenses on the low end. For mid quality lenses, which is what I buy, Canon is much better. On the top end, they are fairly similar.

Bottom line. Look at some lenses, then decide either Canon or Nikon. These will both give you a lot of flexability and niether will ever let you down.

Canon and Nikon are both Camera companies. Sony is a run of the mill Electronic company. If you are serious about photography then stick with a company that is serious about it too. Sony is better known for video games. Do you want to play games or do you want to take photographs?

MegaPixel doesn't matter anyway! What matters is how creative you are in taking pictures. In fact, I prefer Nikon over other brands when it comes to D-SLRs even if it has lower MP compared to Canon. Therefore, the only camera I can suggest for you is either Nikon D3100 or Nikon D5100 two of the top entry-level D-SLRs.
