Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Zoom Nikkor Lens (Worldwide), in Black.

This is a telephoto zoom lens. Its nice but it will be hard to take moving photos without the VR

It'll work fine if you don't mind manually focusing. Only AF-S and AF-I lenses focus with the D5000.

Yes the lens you show will work on your D5000 but it will not auto focus and it doesn't have Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology.

A far better choice would be the newer version: AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G IF-ED.

When using a long focal length lens like a 70-300mm zoom you need to keep your shutter speed at a minimum of 1/focal length - 1/300 sec. - to successfully hand-hold the lens. Nikon claims that their VR technology will allow you to hand-hold the lens at a shutter speed up to 4 stops slower - 1/50 sec.

It will attach to your camera and take photos just fine, but it will not autofocus. As the D5000 does not have an autofocus motor in the body, only lenses with motors offer autofocus for the D5000.

Any lens that says "AF" in the title will not autofocus on a D5000, D3000, or D3100.

Any lens that says "AF-S" or "AF-I" will.AF-I lenses are hard to come by these days, but AF-S lenses should be fairly easy to find.

One other thing you may want to consider when buying a long telephoto lens is VR (Vibration Reduction). Lenses that are stabilized with VR offer sharper, crisper pictures at lower shutter speeds.
