Will Nikon fix my camera? IMPORTANT?
So what happened was the camera bag was open and I went to pick it up without realizing. So the big Nikon D90 falls out and the glass lens filter breaks into pieces. I'm pretty sure that the lens isn't damaged at all, but I'm wondering if Nikon will be able to fix my camera and how much that would cost? Also, if you have an approximate time of how long it would take to fix it, that would be great to know!
Unless you have an extended protection program Nikon will most likely not fix your camera (at least for free). Negligence (which is what dropping the camera from your bag would be considered) is not covered by manufacturer warranty.
In terms of how much it would cost to fix, it really depends on what's wrong with it… If the lens is internally damaged it would probably cost more than the lens is worth.
As far as I understand you only damaged the lens filter.
There's no need to send the camera for repair unless the actual lens or camera has been damaged, in which case they would fix it as long as it is still under warranty. As for negligence, the guy at DigitalRev TV painted his camera pink but got it fixed for free (talk about abuse right there haha), not sure if Nikon would do this.
They do not provide replacements for damaged filters. You have to buy a new filter.
Unscrew the filter, get a new one, simple as that - there's not really much to fix here. Unless you're mistaking an actual part of the lens for a filter. But then i'm pretty sure that you'd still be better off just getting a new lens, cause fixing that would cost. A lot.
What needs to be repaired?
If it is just a lens filter, just buy a new one and replace it. On the other hand, if the filter threads got messed up from the fall and you can't remove the old filter, then yes, then lens would need to be repaired by either Nikon or a local Nikon authorized repair shop (check your local camera shops, and not bestbuy/walmart).
The other thing to consider… IF you bought a "gray market"/import camera/lens, then Nikon WILL NOT repair it even if you offer to pay (unless they changed their policy this year). You would then need to ind a local shop for that.
