Will I benefit from making the transition to full frame DSLR Camera?

I first has a Nikon D70… Then a D60 and now a D5100. I have 4 DX lenses. I really like the 5100 and what can be achieved within the price and I also produce small films of which 2 have been shown at film festivals.

I'm considering jumping up to a Nikon D600 into the world of full frame. I choose the d600 because of weight as much of what I do is outdoors.

The question is, nowadays with DX being so good will I relaly see the benefit of jumping to FX format or will I resent spending the extra? Maybe someone has done the same as me and can give their opinion?

I can say this, which you should already know. Going to full frame won't improve your photography just because of the sensor size. It's all about your skill with a camera crop or full.

You are not going to get any benefit out of a full frame camera until you upgrade your lenses. Of course, with DX lenses you will want to eventually replace them all (but for now - they will work on a D600 in DX mode).

And that just does not mean replacing them with full frame consumer-grade lenses, but replacing them with full frame premium lenses - those that are f/2.8 for zooms or f/1.4 or f/1.8 for primes.

Without upgrading lenses, it is pointless to upgrade to a D600.

The short answer is that you will probably not benefit to a large degree in technical quality, and you will have to invest heavily in new lenses, since your DX lenses won't cover FX.

I personally don't 'upgrade' anything unless I actually have a 'need' for what i'm upgrading to.

What i'm trying to say is… If you really needed to 'upgrade' then you would already have done the research and would know exactly what to expect from a full-frame camera… You would understand the benefits full-frame brings…

You aren't ready to 'upgrade'… You chose to ask whether you should rather than doing the research and knowing exactly why you either did or didn't…

At this moment and time I personally don't need what full-frame will offer me… That's where I'm… Other contributors here might feel restricted with their APS C sized sensors and be looking forward to experimenting or working with full-frame 'kit'… Everybody is different… I would rather know exactly where I'm, than ask a stranger for their opinion.

You change your camera more often than I change my socks ;-)

What do you hope to achieve by changing? What can the D600 do that your D5200 can't? Is that essential for you? Is it worth the cost?
