Will a nikon D80 and a Nikkor 80-200 f2.8D lens work good?
Will a nikon D80 and a Nikkor 80-200 f2.8D lens work good?
Sure. Not the fastest to focus and not a light combo but it will work well.
Yes.
Nikon made several 80-200mm f/2.8 lenses - here's an overview: http://www.kenrockwell.com/...istory.htm
The one still in production, the 2-ring AF-D, will autofocus and meter just fine on a D80.It also has a collar for tripod work, which some of the older models lack. I use one of these myself on a D200 and it's a very nice lens.
If you want a teleconverter for it, I can recommend the Kenko Pro series. Good optics combined with okay build quality. I use an older Kenko 1.4x TC which preserves the autofocus (unlike the Nikon TC!) and metering, although it doesn't transmit the altered focal length and aperture information to the exif info (current Kenko TCs do.)
With a 1.4x TC you get 280mm @ f/4, still with good image quality and AF speed.
With a 2x TC you get 400mm @ f/5.6, with noticeable degradation in both departments.
