Will a Full frame Lens work on a APS-C sensor?

I have Nikon D3000 with kit lens (APS-C format sensor) and I'm having few questions
(1) if I can attach a full frame Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens to it and will it work
(2) Even if it works what will the difference in the image quality and its drawbacks on using a Full frame lens to a DX format sensor
(3) Should I go for this lens.
(4) is it Value for Money
(5) How to read the markings on the mentioned lens even if i get the chance to use it

Please attach links to any external sites if you can. Please be detailed and specific since I'm making my decision based on this. (please NO one liners)

Of course.

They are listed in the back of your user manual.

What you need to do is buy AF-S lenses that have auto focus motors in the lens

The AF lens does NOT have an internal motor, so you will have to manually focus that lens if you do buy it.

Here is the lens you need.

1) It will work, but it won't autofocus. Not because it's a full frame (FX) lens, but because this particular lens doesn't have an autofocus motor in the lens, and your camera (unlike e.g. The D90 or D7000) doesn't have one in the camera body either. That's the case with all AF lenses - you need AF-S lenses to autofocus. E. G. The 50mm/1.8G AF-S (as opposed to the 50mm/1.8D AF)

2) There are no drawbacks. One might even argue that FX lenses are superior to DX lenses as they are designed for a larger sensor, and thus a DX sensor crops its image out of the sweet spot in the middle of the projected image. That's a rather academic point though.

3) No, spend a bit more money and get the 50mm/1.8G AF-S instead. Or the 50mm/1.4G AF-S, but the prices for that one are currently exorbitantly high due to the recent disaster in Japan. Both are good portrait and low light lenses.

4) Very good.

5) The 50mm/1.8G doesn't have the same markings as the D version, so that's a non-issue.

Hey Sid if you're gonna be upgrading sometime in the future to a full frame camera and you don't mind doing manual focus then this lens is pretty good. You might want to wait for the new lens AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G. This one autofocuses on your camera.
