Why does the Nikon D3000 say this?
It says the total camera resolution is 10.8MP but it then says the effective camera resolution is 10.2MP.
So am I shooting with 10.8 or 10.2MP
Added (1). @Hjh-it's not a crime to have a Nikon D 3000, as I'm sure many other people do and it's also not a crime to have little hearts next to my profile name as I'm sure other people do as well.
Effective Resolution Vs Total Resolution
A digital camera's total resolution refers to the total number of pixels on a CCD chip. For various reasons however many pixels on a chip are often not used to produce the image. This may be because some of the pixels are used in a chips circuitry to calculate charge or simply because degradation around the edges renders those pixels unusable. Therefore the total Resolution figure is not the best way to gauge the capabilities of a camera chip.
Another term known as effective resolution refers to the number of actual pixels used to produce a digital image. As many pixels on a camera chip are not utilized, so it is the effective resolution figure that will provide a truer measure of the resolution capabilities of a digital camera.
The largest image size, if you noticed, is 3872 x 2592 which works out to be 10036224 or 10.036 megapixels.
So the fact is that you're neither shooting at 10.2 or 10.8 megapixels, but rather 10.036.
