Which lens is better for travel? Nikkor 18-55mm or 35mm f/1.8?

Next month I will be traveling to Europe and I was wondering which lens would be better to take with me. I own a Nikon D3100 and have the 18-55mm lens already, but I was looking at purchasing the 35mm. It seems to have much better image quality and is more compact, but my only concerns are not being able to zoom with this lens or get a wide angle shot. I'm trying to pack lightly and do not want to bring more than one lens with me if not necessary. Any recommendations as to what I should do?

The 18-55mm lens will have a little more use because of the variable zoom

you can use the 35mm f/1.8 but you will be doing a lot more walking around to try to fit what you want in the frame.

if you want to do shots of buildings, many of which are quite unique in Europe (depending on where you are going), you are going to want that 18-55mm

The 18-55 is a great multipurpose lens, I would go with that.

When on travel or vacation, I take the Nikon 18-200mm as a single lens. But it is not cheap, so I'm not sure if it is within your budget.

Take the 18-55.

The 18-55 lens will do everything you want. Image quality isn't much higher on the 35mm, but it is great for indoors with no flash.

Both lenses are pretty small and light. It will not take up that much space as their full frame counter part.

If I were you I would just bring both. The 18-55 I would use for general purpose during day time(or good light) and use the 35mm at night time or indoors. Trust me you won't regret bringing the 35mm especially doing low light photography.

If possible Both, The 35mm F 1.8 will aid you when the light goes low. Think dinner time.

The 18-55mm is your standard kit lens and will well work fine. And 18mm will be nice wide on your crop sensor body for landscapes. Or group shots.

The 35mm would mean walking back… And sometimes you can't.

So both if possible if not the 18-55mm. But remember for low light it is hard to beat the 35mm f1.8

Luckily the 35mm is not that big or heavy so see if you can pack it with you for those special occasions.
