I'm going to purchase a nikon D90 which kit should i get 18-55 or 18-105 if i purchase the 18-55 i save alot of money but i'm thinking more along the lines of which would be great for portraits and General things such as buildings, flowers and on the odd occasion scenery.

Both are good optical quality but the 18-105 is a very nice range to have as a first lens. For a lot of people it will cover 95% of their needs. If you can afford it go with that.

The 18 to 105 will fit all your described need. People usually take portraits in the 85 to 100 range. For wider angle shots ( like for scenery, landscapes, etc) 35 and under is used. While the 18 to 55 is fine, its more for people who want a short zoom for street shooting or impromptu events.

For the nikon D90 go with 18-55lens which is better for you.

• VR (Vibration Reduction) minimizes camera-movement image blur, enabling handheld shooting ~3 stops slower
• Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element and aspherical lens element
• Built-in A/M switch enables instant exchange between AF & manual focus
• Silent Wave Motor for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet AF
• Non-rotating front element eases use of polarizing filters
• Rounded 7-blade aperture diaphragm renders pleasing out-of-focus highlights
