I have a dslr 3100 from nikon. Stick with the nikon brand. Check out Nikons website, they still make them.

If you can find a good used Nikon 35 mm "F" series camera made after about 1990, your can use your lenses and the lens that comes with it on your D40.

Just remember that any of your DX lenses you have been using with your D40 will vignette some based upon their design, but will NOT damage the camera in any way.

I have used one of the Nikon N65 (F65 in Europe) and it is a nice little 35 mm camera and costs less than $80 USD, used. If you can score a Nikon F4, that camera will certainly be the best choice. It is the model we used at the newspapers for nearly a decade. I still have one left and it still works flawlessly.

Try the Zenit ET with a Helios or Industar 50mm lens. Don't trust the (obsolete Selenium) lightmeter. It's no longer accurate. Start learning with the Sunny f/16 Rule then progress to How to Meter With your Eyes and Brain. After you've mastered those, you won't trust your dSLR's Auto mode ever again.
