Jake

I have a Nikon D40, I would like to upgrade to something better, but I do not want to have to purchase lenses if i don't have to. Is there A upgrade where I can use my old lenses?

As long as you buy a Nikon, you can use your old lenses. If you get a D3xxx or D5xxx, they will only autofocus with AF-S lenses but the AF lenses will fit on the camera.

Ken Rockwell explains it in a lot more detail and has a handy chart.

Any of the Nikon D3000 series (the D3200 being the latest) or D5000 series (the D5200 being the latest).

They will all use your same lenses, in fact, All current Nikon dSLR's will use your old lenses you used on the D40

Yes they will work. And since your D40 does not have a focus motor, I'm assuming your lenses are AF-S, or you are already manually focusing those that are not.

A new D3xxx or D5xxx camera will be exactly the same. However, if you own some lenses that you have to manually focus that are AF (but not AF-S), if you upgrade to a D90 or D7xxx, they will now autofocus as these cameras do have an internal focus motor.
