Turn off focus light on nikon d3000?

Just before i take a photo in low light, the light comes on and shines on the subject.
I'm assuming this is to reduce red eye, but i don't use flash often so I just want to turn it off if I can.
anyone know if that's possible?

It's there most likely to help the camera focus on the object. Do you want it off? Find that function in the menu. Focusing Light--I assume.

That's the auto focus assist light.

To turn it off, press the Menu button and go to the shooting menu.
Select "Off" for the AF-Assist light.

You can find exact directions on page 122 of your manual.

If you turn it off you're going to have a lot of out of focus shots because the camera needs that light to focus.

It's not to do with red-eye, it the AF Assist light to help the camera autofocus in low light conditions. You can't turn it off, but you may find the autofcous then 'hunts' for focus. You may have to switch to manual focus.
