Travel Lens for Haiti Trip?

I'm going to Haiti on a missions trip in a couple of months and I'm bringing my camera with me. I was wondering what a good lens would be to bring since I don't really want to deal with multiple lenses, changing them and cleaning out dust and dirt. Does anyone know of any lenses that I could get for relatively cheap that would work for portraits and wider angle shots? I use a Nikon D3100 and right now I'm stuck using the kit lens which is 18-35 and a telephoto 55-200. I have a budget of about $300.00, maybe a bit more if it is absolutely necessary.

The lenses you have now should be perfectly fine. They cover the range you require. A nifty fifty for portraits would be your best addition, but not mandatory.

Perki88 is right.

What you may want to consider is the Nikkor 40 mm macro lens ($280)

I do not know why you are intimidated with taking a number of lenses with you, but the two you have now, plus the 40 mm f/2.8 macro should cover all you will be shooting.

The lens you would want to shoot wider shots is the 10-24 mm lens, but it is way outside your budget.

When I travel, I carry two dSLR bodies and four selected lenses in my backpack

As long as you keep your camera and lens caps, on when not in use and keep a UV filter on each lens to protect the front elements from sticky fingers, dust and mud, you should be just fine.

Things to consider

* never change lenses in windy or dusty conditions.
* take a hand blower like a "rocket" blower and a shaving brush to clean your equipment each evening.
* copy all your images to your computer at the end of each shooting day to a new file folder named for the subject/location and date so you can find them later.
* once all the images are safely on your computer, format the card using the format feature on the camera.
* do NOT try to use a single large capacity memory card and delete images to make room for more shots. This is the single reason people end up with corrupted image files and in some cases, corrupted memory cards.

There are many interesting subjects to shoot on your trip from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien if your mission is on the North side of the island.

Before taking any photos of anything, make sure that you have permission. Your hosts will be able to provide that information.
