I once talked to a contracted photographer, and his start was taking picture on his own for his friends, family, and his hobbies, as well. He had over 20 years of years under his belt and most of which he now has in sample files on a personal website. The best photos are all under his instruction and the placement of props are his instructions plus the poses of the characters in his shots. I say he did a lot of studying on his own, made it his number one item of interest for his life, and place his priorities straight to become to who he is today. Plus he was really good at transmitting his information and needs among various clients, managers, and the go in between. So, that must have been something which he built up in the process of being a photographer.

1. Read your manual. It is the best teacher you will have in the beginning. It will answer most of your questions.Re-read it in a month or so, and you will learn even more once you've been practicing.
2. Take lots of photos.
3. Have a person who is pretty good critique you work.
4. Repeat 1, 2, and 3.

So basically you want to do everything a consumer does when they buy a camera. When you want to control how much blur is in the background use Av mode.smaller number means your subject will be sharper. It also helps when there isn't enough light (f2.8 or wider is recommended for low light and fast action). When you want to capture motion use Tv mode. The larger the number after the "/" the more action it will freeze and produce less motion blur. This comes at a price though as a faster shutter speed will reduce the amount of light that reaches the sensor. This will make your photo darker then a slower speed.
