I'm planning on buying a Nikon D3100 but am a bit constrained by budget. So I'm looking at the second hand market. I've found a guy selling his Sigma 70-300mm Macro DG Telephoto Lens for 80$
i'm really new to DSLR photography and was hoping for some advice on it
does it even fit my D3100? It said Nikon mount. And is it any good? It costs some 250$ new

Any lens you by for your entry level D3100 has to be a Nikkor AF-S lens or one that has an internal auto-focus motor.

There are a lot of them out there.

Had you looked on line, you would have seen that, that lens is not made in a Nikon mount.

Take a look at the Nikkor 55-200 mm lens. It costs $200 and will keep you within you budget.

There's plenty of time to build your camera system while you learn how to use the fine D3100

The Sigma 70-300mm Macro is a cheap, low quality 70-300mm. If you can't afford the really good Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR, you would probably be better off with the pretty good AF-S 55-300mm VR DX or the AF-S 55-200mm VR DX telephoto.

If it's the "APO" version of this lens, it's one of the best low-end 70-300 zooms around. Those cost about $210 new, though, so I don't know where you got the $250 from.
The non-"APO" version of this lens is OK, but not nearly as good.

Yes, it will fit your camera if it has a Nikon mount.

Most versions of this lens in Nikon mount don't have a built-in autofocus motor, however, so if your body doesn't (I don't think it does), you won't get full autofocus with it.

Peace.

note: despite what someone above said, you do not *have* to get AF-S compatible lenses for your camera. You can use any Nikon-compatible lens, however non-AF-S lenses will not autofocus.

I suspect that's one of those old lenses with sigma molded into the plastic on the zoom ring. Those are pre digitial. It should fit but will be manual focus.
