Sigma 150-500 on a Nikon D5000?

I'm looking to invest in a new lens and would like to get the sigma 150-500 but will it fit onto my Nikon D5000.
Also do you think this lens would be good for surf photography?

It will only fit if it is a Nikon mount. And this lens will need to be used with a tripod. To take good surf photos, you need a fast lens.

I agree with Carl on both his points. However, to me, there's a greater question. I have a basic distrust of 3rd party lenses because of my bad experience with one brand - Tamron.

Some, like a friend of mine, have excellent luck with 3rd party gear but I won't buy another one.

Yes it will fit. If it has a HSM motor, it will autofocus as well.

The best surf photographs I've seen were not done with super telephoto lenses shot from the shore, but rather with cameras in water proof casings with a wide angle lens- pulling you right into the action.

I have the Sigma 150-500mm and its an excellent lens, despite what Jim says (just 'cos he got one duff lens, he always says 'don't buy third party lenses'). You can get duff branded lenses too…

It's an HSM lens, which means it has a focus motor in the lens, so it will autofocus fine on your D5000.It will have the reach for surf photography, but is not a very fast lens (f6.3 is the widest aperture at 500mm) so you will need good light, or up the ISO to get a better shutter speed.
It has image stabilisation in it and I've found it to be pretty good, even when hand held.
