Should I sell my DSLR?

I got the Canon T3i about a week ago and just found out they released the T4i. Should I sell my T3i and get the Canon T4i or the NIkon D3200 or D90? Or should I keep mine. I don't know what to do.

I would sell it

If you have to ask that question, then sell your nice T3i and buy a "bridge" (advanced P&S) camera. But then again… A week after you buy a "bridge" camera you will probably be back here asking if you should sell that and get the latest and greatest.

Photography is roughly 70% photographer skill/experience, 20% lens quality, and 10% camera body

For goodness sakes, no. Just because the T4i was announced doesn't mean the 3i is a bad camera. The D90 is a 2008 model…

You would only get about 50% of the price you paid for the T3i unless it is absolutely still brand new and in the box, so you decide. I would keep it rather than take such a loss. In a few years, you will know a lot more about photography and you will be able to decide what model you want to buy - if any - on your own.

No, because the T3i is an excellent beginner camera, use it to develop your skill and eye. It is the photographer's vision that is most important and learning to execute the vision not the the camera… It is just a tool. Any pro can take that camera and make wonderful photographs. It has a manual setting and good resolution.

It depends. Are you a photographer or a gear head? If a photographer, you would know that there would probably be no perceptible difference between images taken on the T3i and T4i. If you're a gear head, then you won't be happy without the latest and greatest. In that case, photography would actually be your secondary interest.

So you would sell your brand new T3i at a loss to buy a marginally better T4i?

This was shot with a Rebel XSi

This was shot with a T1i

This was Shot with a 60D

This was shot with a 5D MkII

I shot all of these… Do you see a major difference in image quality? No right? And we're going from a 5 year Rebel XSi (the closest equivalent is the Rebel T3 @ 500$) right up to the 5DMkII @ 2500$.

Your T3i is perfectly fine.

I still shoot with my XSi… The shot above was shot a few weeks ago. Why do I have som many cameras (I don;t own the 60D, my usual assistant does, we swap cameras sometimes in the middle of a shoot) … Because i shoot for clients and need backup gear. That is the only reason.

Jake,

The camera is only an extension of your talent. Cameras do not take good photos; people take good photos. With that in mind, ask yourself, how will I benefit by having this new camera. Many times the only difference is a bell or whistle you can do without. What can that change do for you and your talent?
