Problems with a camera memory card?

I recently purchased a (used) Nikon D40 camera, which as far as I know is in good condition. However, I purchased a Lexar 633 memory card, and when I put it in the camera it told me to format the memory card, so I did, and now my camera is saying that the memory card is full. My friend put it in her camera and it worked just fine. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to fix this, or if I just got screwed over when buying this camera. I really don't know much about this so I was hoping maybe someone else would!

If it's more than 4GB it may not work.

Format the card in your PC using the default options (the formatting software duplicates the current options) but don't select the quick format option. That will do a more thorough check of the card. If it completes OK try it in the camera again.

The D40 can only use up to 32gb cards. My guess is your card is incompatible.

The D40 can only use SDHC memory cards. Be sure that your 633x is not an SDXC card, which is not compatible with the D40. Unless your friend's camera was also a D40, it doesn't matter if the card works in it or not.

Also, what is the memory capacity of your card? Lexar makes a bunch of 633x cards ranging from 16GB all the way to 512GB. It's likely that your old D40 can't accept cards beyond 32GB. Check your owner's manual for details, or just call Nikon's help line 1-800-Nikon-US.

Look at page 119 in your manual. The D40 accepts SD or SDHC cards. Look in the index under "memory card and you'll find more information.

Sometimes it happens that one particular card doesn't work even though it should. No sense arguing with the camera. Return the card or sell it to your friend then buy a new one of a different brand and model.
