Photography student looking for first DSLR?

I'm a freshman in college with an intended major in photography and am looking to buy my first dslr camera. I've mostly done traditional work with film but I want to upgrade to digital but I just can't decide what to buy. I'm looking into buying the Nikon D3100 package with the 2 lenses. Any other suggestions or opinions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Don't buy anything yet until you find out from your teacher what he wants you to get. Traditional photography course usually requires you to use a film camera.

Well if you hav the money to spend, your may want an extra, maybe not as expensive camera, lik a d50 or something, this is a camera you can kinda keep around u all the time for informal stuff that may catch your eye

I have the Canon Rebel t2i and i love it.
here's a basic comparison:

You'll get the typical Canon v. Nikon p***ing match, but I feel my Pentax was much less expensive, vibration compensation built into the body, and allows me to take the photos I want to take. (Admittedly, there aren't tons of after market lenses, but they'll take any Pentax lens ever made, so who cares?)
