Photographing a black horse?
I'm an avid photographer and have recently been blessed with having my mare in my "backyard". Well now that I have the time and convience of her location I would like to start getting some really good photographs of her. But there's one problem. She's completely black and you can't see her features at all in the pictures. I would like some tips if any of y'all have camera or horse photography experience? Also, I use a Nikon D60 if that helps.
You could try like… Taking her into the sunlight.
that might not work. I think that it is just about getting the right sunlight and angle.
i try taking pics of my cat (lame i know) but only some come out because she mainly black.
try a flash or maybe use the golden glow or whatever that is when it's sunrise or sunset, that might bring her out.
or set her right against it that might bring in some good shadowing there.
You could try searching for livestock photography tips on the internet. I did see a book on livestock photography once but I'm not sure if it is still in print. Using a large white board to reflect light onto the shaded side of the horse may help to bring out all of her features. This method is best if the horse is standing and under control. Using a flash may work as well but may scare your horse.
Best of luck
Kinda cliche but I love taking pictures of my black horse in the sunset. It looks stunning, especially if you have a nice horizon.
I find pictures in the summer are better for showing off their features though, because of the winter coat. As long as its bright and her coat isn't too thick/long you should probably get good pictures.
Have fun!
Try taking a picture with your back to the sun (but don't get your shadow in the picture). The sun should be shining on her, and reflect off of her. I've taken pics of my angus cattle like this, and they come out great.
You want to pick a time of day where the sunlight is hitting her side (as opposed to just shining straight down onto her). Late afternoon is probably the best, as light in the morning can be too harsh. Overcast days won't work, you need to have the sun hitting her body to highlight her features.
You need to pick a nice open area, where you won't have shadows streaking across her, with a nice background (i.e. No barbed wire fence or lawnmowers or kids or mounds of poop).
You need to be between the sun and your horse. If the horse is between you and the sun, you'll need to use your flash, which will probably turn out very yucky, even if your mare doesn't get spooked. That method will probably give you a lot of orbs, too, so just keep the sun at your back.
Have someone hold her for you, or if you want her loose, they can help wrangle her into the right position and keep her attention.
Turn down your ISO as low as it can go. If you have it up high or on Automatic, you can end up with grainy pics. You should have enough light to keep a fast shutter speed and low ISO. Play around with your depth of field. You will want to keep it deep enough to keep all of her in focus, but shallow enough so she doesn't get "lost" in the background.
Also keep in mind the Rule of Thirds. Whether you're doing conformation shots or fun shots, you want to draw the viewer's eye to highlight certain features by placing them at the four intersections, and keeping natural lines of the body along the horizontal and vertical lines.
EDIT: Also, don't let your camera dictate your pics! Go to manual focus if you have a helper, or change the focal point in your camera's automatic focus. If possible, do everything yourself- meaning nothing automatic, go to full manual.
