Nikon SLR Cameras

Nikon or Canon. (20 characters)?

I'm planning on taking a Photography class since I want to be a Photojournalist. My mom also is taking a Forensic Science college course in which she needs a DSLR camera that can also take videos, then of course a tripod, xtra batteries, charger, etc etc. So we decided that we'll get a camera for both of us.
I found some nice ones online, but I can't decide between the Nikon or the Canon. Which would you suggest?

Here's the Nikons I like:

- Nikon D5000 ~ http://www.nikonusa.com/...s.Overview

- Nikon D3100 ~ http://www.nikonusa.com/...D3100.html

And the Canons:

Have you considered that only Nikon offers what is called Image Authentication?

This is one reason many forensic departments use them. It is simple enough for the court to authenticate a original image as qualifying as evidence based upon chain of custody and using the special software available to them from Nikon.

I shoot for newspapers and magazines and always have the Image Authentication feature turned on, for similar reasons. If someone tweaks my photo, I have proof of the original and my suit against them is pro forma

I have a Nikon D300 which I love! I've had Nikon cameras for years, mostly because of their reliability but also because of the Nikon lens system. All but a couple of Nikon cameras use the old "F" mount system. I have Nikons from the mid 1960's that will accept my newest Nikon Digital lenses, and I can use the lenses that I have purchased over the past 40 years on my new Nikon Digital camera. The lenses won't auto focus unless I buy and adapter, but that's not needed. Since the both of you will be sharing the camera, the main difference in your needs as a photojournalist and a forensic science major, will likely be the use of what lens is needed for the particular assignment. As a photojournalist, your types of assignments may be varied as to the photos needed. Your mother will likely mostly be taking closeups of "evidence". Some of the lenses you collect could be shared. In the future if one of you would decide a different camera was needed for your work, as long as it was another Nikon that uses the "F" mount, the lenses are still very usable. Cameras always change faster than a lens system will.

Nikon or Canon that's a hard choice I'm afraid. They are the two leaders in the camera industry. I prefer canon personally. But before you buy new check these used Canons and Nikon's out:

They are in great condition and for a good price. Then you may be able to get one of each and decide which one you like better.
