I just got the nikon. J1 with the 10-30 mm lens wanted to know if I really need the 10mm or the 30 something one.

I'm still trying to figure if I paid to much for this camera. I have two toddlers with a canon powershot sd1000. Wanted something better.

I was looking at the canon rebel t2i and a nikon d3100 14.2. Not sure if I just went with the j1 cause it was smaller and cutier.

I own a nikon d3100. That wasn't my initial choice the. I was thinking about csc's, or compact system cameras like the nikon j1 or the sony nex 3.
I ended up choosing the d3100 because I think it's a better choice. So far, all compact system cameras are pretty costly. But that's fine. But the drawback is the lens. Zoom lenses, which you'll probably need, cost more than the camera itself! Like a 200mm lens(~12x zoom) costs about $800.
Besides, there are not too many lens choices with csc's. You pretty much only get like three or five lenses. Expensive lenses. If you want other lenses, you need a mount of a converter, and you usually don't got to autofocus on mounts. The csc market is still young. I think the best thing to do is stick with a dslr, until you have better selections/pricings.

The Nikon J1 is Way WAY over-priced! For the same price you can get a Nikon D3100.
The J1 is an EVIL camera. Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens camera. It doesn't even have a viewfinder you can look through. The Canon Rebel is also a nice camera.
