Nikon d7000: what does fEE mean?

Gus

I just got a Nikon d7000 and I can't take any pictures. I'm looking at the control panel where it gives the aperture info and it says "fEE" when I depress the shutter release half-way and I can't find that anywhere in the manual. It also says "r10" where it tells the number of pictures remaining on the memory card.

I think it might have something to do with the old lenses I'm using. I'm using lenses that I acquired when I inherited an old Nikon 2020

FEE means it doesn't like the aperture information it's getting from the lens. In this case the most likely cause is you not putting the aperture ring on the lens on the maximum value.

On older lenses with a rotating aperture ring, you need to rotate it to the maximum f/stop (such as 22) and then slide a lock on the ring. That way, the camera can select from the full range of f-stops available. FEE means an error has occurred because you haven't done above settings. It's a common error that I find all the times with older lenses or 3rd party lenses with aperture rings.

If the lens is fully manual, use it in manual mode only, M not P, S or A.

If your lens is AF and has an aperture ring, set aperture to the largest number and leave it there. To change aperture settings, use the controls on the body. You can do this with whatever mode your camera is in. You can only use the aperture ring in manual mode.

R10 just indicates the buffer size. You can take 10 pictures in rapid succession (I think) with the current settings. You don't usually see it come out because you are already looking at the viewfinder but it is a normal indicator.
