If you are using two batteries in the grip, it could be that the one you are trying in the camera is exhausted and needs to be charged.

Another thought, maybe you aren't putting the battery cover back on properly so the battery isn't making proper contact.

It's always best to consult the instruction manual when experiencing problems… And when adding additional accessories.

My D7000 works fine without the cameras battery door being closed/shut so if it's dodgy connections that are causing your problem, it's the contacts on the inside of the camera.

You really haven't given much info to help diagnose your problem, are you using a single EN EL15 or working with 2, or are you using one EN EL15 with the AA battery tray? The reason i'm asking is because you need to go to the Menu and adjust some settings… In the CUSTOM SETTING MENU go to d shooting/display and scroll to d13 this gives you the options for the AA battery tray, after selecting the AA battery type go to d14 and choose which battery the camera takes it's power from first, the battery in the grip or the battery in the camera.

To be fair it sounds like the battery might need charging… It's either that or you need to consult someone that doesn't struggle with instruction manuals and i'd advise you to take the camera to your local camera shop for more help… Make sure you approach an actual camera store and not some place that sells washing machines and TVs.

The pins on the grip have bent the contacts in the camera. It is possible to straighten the contacts. Once straightened you will need to put a thin spacer between the camera and the grip, a thin piece of cardboard or similar will normally fix the problem. This is a common problem with some grips.
