Nikon D40X Powering on and off By itself?

I'm having an issue with my Nikon D40X. It consistently will power on and off by itself. Flashing. I'm getting ready to purchase a new battery. Does anyone else have any idea what would cause this?

Maybe the electronics in the camera have gone haywire. I'd check with Nikon for an estimate to repair and decide if I should get a newer camera or fix up this old one.
