Planning to buy a Telephoto lens for my D40.

does 'Nikon 55-300mm AF-S DX NIKKOR lens' has a big difference compared to 'Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm lens' when it comes to zooming?

asking this because both have a huge price difference.

The 300mm is approx. 50% more zoom. Look at this sample (sorry for it being so big)

The new 55-300 mm would be the lens of choice for most people

The new 55-300 mm gives you that extra amount of reach when shooting sports, action and some wildlife. The extra $200 is well worth it, even if you have to wait a month or two to save up the extra $200. The alternative, the AF-S VR 70-300 mm lens costs nearly $400 more than the 55-200 mm.

At this time, the AF-S VR 55-300 mm lens gives you the most bang for the buck.

I would suggest going with Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX NIKKOR Lens
+ Excellent Image Quality
+ Solid build with metal mount
+ Significantly better in all ways than the Nikon 55-200mm VR

I also have a nikon d40 and when i was looking at new lenses i went with a tamron 18-200mm lense. I love only having one lense and not having to switch around. I think it was about $400? Or so but then i sold my 18-55mm. I love it. I use it for all kinds of things and was the photographer at my cousins wedding a few weeks ago and it did great. The nikon version was alot more expensive and my husband said no so i went with the tamron.i've had it about a year now and no complaints at all.
