Nikon 1 vs Nikon D5100?

I'm trying to get a new camera from Nikon.
My friends say the brand new Nikon 1 has awesome quality and high mega-pixels
but I was considering to get Nikon D5100 for a long time. Now I'm having a struggle
on which one to get. Please tell me which one is better not regarding of prices. Thanks!
P.S.
Please tell why which one is better.

Well lets put it this way. EVIL cameras are way over rated, over priced and over hyped point and shoot cameras that happen to change lenses - and, they don't even have a view finder, just that ugly little screen - oh please.
Want a real camera? Buy Canon or Nikon dslr cameras - real cameras not toys for snappers. If all you want to do is run around the bar with your friends snapping then get the EVIL. If you want to do serious photography buy a dslr.

Here is how the sensors of those two cameras compare.
As you can see, the larger the sensor, the better the performance.
The Nikon 1 might be a good choice for you if you want a camera that you can place in your briefcase or purse with a second lens and take it everywhere with you.
The D5100 is a camera that is geared toward a new photographer who wants to be able to learn how to shoot professional quality images for under $1, 000. With this camera, you can certainly spend a number of years, learning how to control a fully adjustable camera and produce some rather amazing images.
I think in the end you may need to visit a proper camera shop and hold both in your hands. I was just in Sam's Club and both cameras were being sold at a good savings.

If you want to do some casual photography the Nikon 1 is still a great buy. It is for people who want DSLR like control and most importantly portability. The image sensor is pretty small, but not too degraded IQ wise than the proper DSLRs. The price you will end up paying will be about 50% while retaining 70%-80% of functionality of the D5100. For the features it offers I think the Nikon 1 is surely overpriced.
The D5100 or even the beginner D3100 will deliver better image quality for sure and they use modern lenses (not all lenses) manufactured by Nikon like the great 50mm f1.8. Proper DSLR will allow some serious wide angle, macro, sports or telephoto shoots when paired with the right lenses.
