Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 vs Nikkor 50mm f/1.8?

Hi, I'm a beginner photographer with a Nikon d5100. I have the kit lens (Nikkor 18-55mm) I'd really like to purchase a prime lens, mainly for portraits and achieving nice blur and bokeh. Both lenses are a good price and I can't decide. However, the Auto focus 50mm is more expensive and I don't have the money right now for it. I'm a beginner so I feel I should probably purchase an AF-S lens. Which lens would you recommend, and what are the main differences?

You want the 50mm because with a 35mm lens it is rather hard to take a nice portrait due to it's wider angle of view. In all honesty, as long as you are saving, why don't you save up for the 50mm f1.4? That is fantastic lens and will last you a lifetime. You do not need to worry about auto focus on these lenses because they are really easy to focus. Auto focus is very helpful for action and with longer lenses.

Dear Friend Since you have clarified your Needs Just go for 50mm 1.8 G as Autofucus is need in lot of Situations and So far as blur is Concerned you can even get it with 18-55 to get blur you may use the Shortest F Number and MAX Focal Length that is 55 mm for you and try to go as close as possible to the subject as you are comfortable and Just click and you may get Bokeh (Out of Focus Blur )

So far is 50 mm 1.8 G is concerned just go for it you will never repent its a wonderful lens and you love photographing with it portraits specially it is dam good. However 1.4 and 1.2 are Much Expensive options and are about 90% Same you may join any photography club and meet with lot of photographers with lot of lenses and cameras will know in one day some opotions are here

Collect money then buy Nikkor 50mm till than wait.

The AF-S Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8 lens is that portrait lens. The 35 mm is too short for that purpose.
