Hacking into a DSLR is not likely to produce any better photos.

I strongly advise you not to try - the repair bill from Nikon afterwards would make an oil sheik wince.

There seem to me many third party options to hack the algorithms on Canon cameras in an attempt to make a dSLR into a proper video camera. Not so with Nikon, at least no so far.

This seems to be an attempt to make great dSLR's into video cameras. By the time you have spent the money for all the accessories to do that, you will have invested enough to have a real video camera that uses 3-CCD's and has all the necessary features to make a video editors life much easier.

You have an excellent entry level dSLR that has the capability to shoot amazing still images. Really if you want to shoot video, just buy a good video camera and be done with it.

NOTE: for clarity, cannons shoot cannon balls. Canon makes cameras
