Macro Extension Tube for Nikon D3200?

Matt

Hiya!
I've not long purchased a Nikon d3200, and have the kit 18-55 lens and a 55-200 Nikon lens also.
I've come to realise that getting a macro extension tube seems like the easiest (and probably cheapest) way of doing some macro photography.
After looking around at cheaper extension tubes however, many have bad reviews claiming they don't work with certain lenses.
I was wondering if there's a macro extension tube I can pick up for about the £20 mark that would work with either one of my lenses, preferably both!
I realise my budget is tight, i'm a student however so any input or advice is appreciated!

The problem is that the cheap extension tubes don't have the necessary linkages to permit metering and aperture adjustment with your existing lenses, let alone autofocus.

I use M42 tubes and an old 50mm Pentacon lens for closeup work on my DSLR - but this uses a glassless adapter and my camera can meter stopped down (Av and M modes) - the D3200 can't.

There's no cheap way to do what you want and maintain TTL metering with your existing kit.

The inexpensive macro lenses will work, but you will have to put the camera into fully manual mode. And the aperture can't be adjusted from the lens itself, so you will not have much control over the aperture as there are no electrical contacts for the camera to control the lens.

Without being able to control the aperture, you will have a very difficult time in obtaining a good photo (due to wafer-thin DoF when the lens is wide open).

The more expensive extension tubes preserve the electrical contacts to the lens so that both autofocus and aperture control will be maintained.

With your current equipment the 18-55mm at 55mm can get you pretty close. A macro lens would get you about three times closer. It is probably best to just save up for that.
