Lens for Nikon D5000 with 200mm or 300mm max reach?

I'm looking to get a new lens and have looked at the tamron 70-200mm which looks quite good but I already have a 55-200mm which works well and am looking for something with a little more reach.
Any suggestion apart from 70-300mm (just don't like them).

It looks quite good, but have you tried it! Go to your local camera shop, even if it's really overpriced. Say you want to have a try, because you don't have to buy it from there. Once you're happy you know what you want, buy it online. I'd suggest One Stop Digital in Hong Kong. I've bought from them a few times now, and they send it by recorded mail, very quickly and the prices are very good. Sigma also make a 70-200mm and have released an OS (stabilised) version recently, so maybe look at that too.

The optics in these lenses will be far superior to the optics in your 55-200. They also have a wider aperture (f2.8, instead of your lens' f4.0 - 5.6) and the aperture is constant, which means that the aperture can be as low as f2.8 right through the lens' full zoom range.

I would suggest you look at these types of lenses, and you could buy a converter, either 1.4x or 2x, for the lens if you need a little more reach. A 1.4x converter will allow you to get a zoom range of 98-280mm and a 2x converter will provide you with 140-400mm range. Do bear in mind, though, that if you do use these converters with your 70-200, the minimum aperture will be f4 for the 1.4x converter and f5.6 for the 2x converter.

This is, however, the most affordable choice, without spending a fortune.

Hope all goes well with your purchase.
