Is there a difference in quality between Nikon 50mm 1.8 AF and Nikon 50mm 1.8 AI-S?

I know the AF lens has autofocus and it uses more recent technology. The AI-S one is part of the E series which is from the 70s and it seems like the same lens but a whole lot cheaper. My nikon d3100 does not support autofocus for this lens so the autofocus function is really irrelevant.

The 50 mm lens that will auto-focus with your D3100 is the AF-S 50 mm f/1.4.
The AF 50 mm f/1.8 will still meter with your D3100, but you will have to manually focus it.
The AI-S is a manual focus lens and your D3100 can't meter using it
