Is the nikon d7000 any good for surf photography?

I was wondering if the nikon d7000 is any good for taking shots of waves, and i'm going to new zealand in january and getting the camera duty free

It has one huge drawback, it won't fire unless it thinks it's in focus. That drove me insane. I had a D7000 as a back up camera and one that I used for motion. As a back up to the D3s it served it's purpose only under static situations. For motion it was great. The D3200 is cheaper and would be a better choice in my eyes. You're going to need a a really long lens to get the shots and good ones are huge money. I've shot plenty of surfing and can tell you that FPS performance is a consideration to catch peak moments. Great glass is the big deciding factor in whether your shots look good or great.
