Is Nikon's 50mm my best option?

I'm looking at getting a 50mm for Christmas. I want to start doing more portraits, but I'm still finding "myself" within Photography. I have a D5100. I need a "cheaper" lens too.
Like I said, I want one that's going to work well in low light (like concerts), and portraits, but also just in general.

Ignore Delilah's link, it goes to a youtube video for the Kia Soul. Anyhow, yes. The 50mm is good for portraiture and low light. You can get either the f/1.8 or the f/1.4 50mm. The f/1.4 will run you for quite a bit more money, but does even better than the 1.8 in low light. The 1.8 is still very good though. The quality on the Nikkor 50mm lens is very sharp, but can get a little soft at low aperture numbers.

If I were you I would consider the D3200 and the 50mm f1.4. The D5100 is great but the D5200 is already on the way. You can get great results with the D3200 and the 50mm f1.4 and then you can look into buying even more lenses like the 70-200 f2.8 or 85mm f1.4. You want to get the best lenses possible as they will last you a long, long time. Bodies will come and go quickly with the changes in technology. If you have limited funds, put more money into the lens(s).
