Is it safe to take a photo of a solar eclipse?

I'm using a Nikon d5100 which is a DSLR. I don't have any kind of solar filter to use, but I was wondering if it is safe for me to quickly take a photo of a partial solar eclipse? I'm using an 18-55mm lens.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. Just wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
The only time I can imagine it hurting the camera is if you made it yourself, but even then it would only be because the film got too much light. This shouldn't happen with a store bought camera.

Not really.

1) you would need some training so you could actually get a good shot of the sun with the moon passing between it and the earth.
2) you do need a special solar filter
3) you would need a very long lens or telescope to have a good size image of the eclipse in your frame.

When you look at the moon using your lens at 55 mm, how large is it in your viewfinder? The sun will only be a tiny bit larger.

The astronomy department at your local uni or community college should have a check list and list of warnings you can access.

If you don't have a solar filter, your photo will just look like a bright light.
