Is $399 a good deal for a used Nikon D40?

Camera is in good condition and comes with about $30 of peripherals.

I agree with Emily. I think that is a fair price.

Used is only a good deal if you first know the person selling it and know how they've treated their equipment and second if you can actually see, hold and shoot with it before buying.

Lots of questions about used gear. Treatment? Wet? Lens handling? Storage - always in a case or bag? Lots of questions. What's the shutter count?

Buy used if you wish but get these questions answered to your satisfaction first. Lots of horror stories around about sight unseen used gear.
