I might be buying a 10.2 mega pixel Nikon d3000, but not sure if 10 is enough?

Are you kiddin me? I have a blackberry bold 9000 which has a 2 mp camera and it is awesome. People die for 10.2 mp cameras. But yeah if you gonna waste so much money on 10 why not just wait for a lil more and get a 12?

Some of the newer cameras with more numerous megapixels gain a slight advantage from being newer. However the amount of extra detail captured is slight, and 10 MP is plenty.

Higher MP count does not = better image quality. The 3000 is a good camera, but if you can afford the newer 3100, get a 3100.

Enough for what? The only thing 10MP might not be enough are huge billboard prints. 10MP is perfectly fine for most things. Heck I saw great 20x30 inch prints out of a 4MP camera.
More MP don't necessarily give you better image quality.
Remember that Full HD Resolution is only about 2MP.

So yeah, in terms of MP, the D3000 is fine. If you can get the D3100, buy it instead because it has a better sensor (better ISO performance, dynamic range, color sensitivity… ).

6.1 is enough.

There are a lot of myths out there, and the more megapixels the better is one of them.
