I have a nikon D5000, got it for christmas and i use it all the time, i've read books and pages or internet things to improve. My lens is nikon af-s nikkor 18-55mm not too big. I would like one thats larger in length. OH not over 7, 000 i'm 14 and i won't ruin it but i have to pay so thats a long time to save up. - Any suggestions, on what lens to get?

Another thing, will any nikon or nikkor lens fit in my nikon d5000? Or do i need a special fit?
Oh do you like my profile picture on this thing?

I'd go for a lens up to 300mm myself, but I dunno, it depends what you need or want it for I suppose. You could probably get one of those for about £200 or so. And yes, any Nikon lens will fit your camera.

This would depend on what you'll be taking photos of. If you are taking photos of sports, for example, you'll need to focus on a higher speed lens, to be able to stop the action from a distance. If instead, you'll be taking photos of wildlife, you may be able to get by with a slower lens, but you may want one that is a bit longer.

I have the Tamron 75-300 IS lens, and I got it just to have a general purpose telephoto/zoom lens. It was around $300, if I remember correctly.

You'll just need to make sure that the lens has the same mount as your camera. I have a Canon camera, and there are two different mounts for Canon lenses. When I look at the B&H website, I only see one mount listed for Nikon, so you'll likely be ok. But, when you buy a lens, ask them if it will fit your D5000, just to be sure.

Yes, Monte P is right - it depends on what you will be using it for. Think about that first, make a short list and if you truly don't care about the price, then buy the best you can afford - lenses are a long-term investment.

I can't really recommend getting a new lens yet.

Before you start thinking about getting a new lens, you really need to know how to use your camera. By the time you are ready to buy a new lens, you should be able to answer these questions.
- understand shutter speed and aperture and how they manage exposure
- how to achieve a correct exposure
- understand the limitations of the lens you have
- Lastly, have a clear objective of what you want to photograph… (but can't at the moment)

By understanding the four points above, you ought to have a better idea what kind of pictures you want to take. And find a lens that fits your budget and suits your needs…

In hte meantime

The 50mm f/1.8 is a cheap lens that has tremendous potential. Plus it is cheap enough (about 100 dollars) to play around with. If this doesn't work out, there's no big loss.

For greater range (i.e.sports / wildlife)
70-200mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/4
75-300mm f/4.5-5.6

for wide angle (i.e.landscapes)
10-22mm
11-16mm
16-35mm f/2.8

for greater depth of field (i.e.portraits)
50mm f/1.2
50mm f/1.8
135mm f/2

macro lenses (i.e.bugs or flowers)
180mm f/3.5
100mm f/2.8

You want a lens that's "larger in length"? Do you know what a longer lens does? Does your photography require you to draw in distant objects? Because that's what a "larger in length" lens does. Or do you want to get it because you think it looks cool, like a professional photographer? If it's for the latter reason, just go into a camera store, glance at the lens selection and pick one that looks long enough and that fits your Nikon. If you tell the clerk that you don't care about the price, it will bring joy to his or her heart.

If you actually want it for a photographic purpose, then it sounds like you need to read a few more books and internet pages to learn the purposes for which lenses of different focal lengths are used.

Why do you want a new lens? If it's just because you want to show off, make yourself feel more adequate, etc., then you don't need a new lens.

If you insist, the AFS Nikkor 200mm f/2 is pretty darn impressive.
