I have a nikon d7000 and I'm planning to buy the nikon 85mm micro?

My question is how good should be the nikon r1 system for macro photography… Using this configuration… D7000+nikon 85mm micro+ nikon r1 system… Thanks
p.s I'm not interesting to take photo of bugs… Just flowers and stead objects… Nothing that can run or bite me… Jejeje.

The Nikon R1 would be a fine choice. It is the macro flash I have. I can control it with my D90's built in remote commander, so I'm sure it would work with your D7000.

I'm using the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro. The only issue with that lens is that the lens barrel moves in and out when focusing, so to prevent burning out the focus motor due to strain from the flash unit attached to the lens, you have to focus the lens manually.

This is really not an issue with macro as most of the time they are focused manually anyway as the autofocus systems are not that great at the macro range.

The Nikon 85mm would be a good choice too. The fact is, for macro, especially with a flash you will typically be using f/11 and higher due to the wafer-thin DoF, so a fast lens is not that important for macro.

One thing you may want to experiment with. Set the lens at f/22, and use the R1 flash. You will get some nice photos with a pitch-black background.

Don't worry about diffraction at macro ranges. The DoF is measured in millimeters at macro, and it is more important to use a small shutter for a decent DoF that diffraction is not the most significant thing for sharp photos. I can go up to an incredible f/64 on my Tokina!

I think the 85mm, being an AF-S lens, has internal focus so you won't have to worry about burning out the focus motor with the flash attached. But regardless, you will probably want to manually focus it to get the sharpest photos.
